Shetland Returns—But Where’s Jimmy Perez?
The windswept Shetland Isles welcome back fans for season 8 of the BBC’s beloved crime drama Shetland—but there’s a notable absence that’s impossible to ignore. DI Jimmy Perez, played for nearly a decade by Douglas Henshall, is no longer part of the series. His departure has left many fans wondering: why did Henshall leave, and what’s next for Shetland?
Why Douglas Henshall Left Shetland
Douglas Henshall first announced his departure from the show in August 2022, stating that season 7 would be his last. According to Henshall, the decision was a creative one, made in collaboration with series writer David Kane.
“After series five of Shetland, David Kane and I decided we wanted to do two more series to complete the story of Jimmy Perez,” Henshall explained. “So series six and seven were commissioned together to give us time to wrap up Perez’s story to a satisfactory end.”
For Henshall, saying goodbye to the role wasn’t easy. “It’s been one of the privileges of my career to play Jimmy Perez for almost ten years,” he shared, expressing gratitude to his fellow cast, crew, and the Shetland community. “I’ll miss him and the place.”
But Henshall was also ready for a change. “I think it was always going to be sad, but it will be nice to play somebody who isn’t so irredeemably good as Perez,” he said. “I’m sick of being the good guy.” Since his departure, he has already appeared in Netflix’s hit thriller Who Is Erin Carter?
Meet the New Lead: DI Ruth Calder
Stepping into the spotlight for season 8 is Ashley Jensen, who joins the series as DI Ruth Calder—a hardened Met detective returning to the Isles after 30 years. The new six-part storyline follows Calder as she pursues Ellen Quinn (Maisie Norma Seaton), a vulnerable witness connected to a London gangland murder.
DI Calder is partnered with fan-favorite Tosh (Alison O’Donnell), forming a new and initially fragile alliance. While fans may miss Perez, Calder brings a different energy to the show.
“She’s formidable, she’s strong, she’s a woman in a man’s world,” said Ashley Jensen of her character. “She’s very much an urban detective and is resentfully drawn back to Shetland.”
Calder’s return forces her to confront the past she tried to leave behind. “Her resentment all stems from her history with the Shetland Isles and why she left all those years ago,” Jensen continued. “It’s not that she doesn’t want to be there—it’s the ghosts she has to face.”
Despite arriving with just a small suitcase and no hair straighteners, DI Ruth Calder is here to leave her mark.
A New Era for Shetland
Though the departure of Jimmy Perez marks the end of an era, Shetland is evolving—not ending. Season 8 introduces a new mystery, a fresh dynamic, and a detective with her own inner struggles and complex history. With Ashley Jensen now leading the way, Shetland promises to continue delivering gripping stories and atmospheric crime drama set against one of the most hauntingly beautiful backdrops in British television.
